Mental Health in Wisconsin

Summary of Wisconsin’s Health Challenges

Wisconsin is facing significant health issues, particularly related to mental health and homelessness. Currently, there are 4,515 individuals experiencing homelessness in the state, with 1 in 5 living with a serious mental illness. This situation is compounded by alarming statistics: 888 lives were lost to suicide last year, and 231,000 adults reported having suicidal thoughts.

The impact on youth is equally concerning. High school students with depression are more than twice as likely to drop out compared to their peers. Furthermore, Wisconsinites face considerable barriers to mental health care, as they are over four times more likely to be forced out-of-network for mental health services compared to primary care, resulting in higher out-of-pocket costs and difficulties accessing necessary care.

In addition, a staggering number of people with mental health conditions in the U.S. did not receive any treatment in the past year. In February 2021, 36.4% of adults in Wisconsin reported symptoms of anxiety or depression, with 18.6% unable to access needed counseling or therapy.

These statistics highlight the urgent need for improved mental health services and support systems to address the growing crisis and ensure that individuals receive the care they need.
